Flipped Classroom Instruction

Catalog Description:
It is important that school leaders stay abreast of the newest trends in education and to gain the necessary knowledge to inform and assist fellow educators implementing new methods of instruction. School leaders will be introduced to the flipped classroom approach to instruction. “Flipping the classroom” means that students gain first exposure to new material outside of class, usually via reading or lecture videos, and then use class time to do the harder work of assimilating that knowledge, perhaps through problem-solving, discussion, or debates." Participants will complete readings, watch videos, and explore Internet sites, including the Khan Academy, to familiarize themselves with the pros and cons of the flipped instruction model and to discover the resources available to assist in flipping the classroom. Examples of successful flipped classrooms will be explored, and participants will view recorded webinars from educators considered experts in the flipped model of instruction. Participants will discuss flipping instruction in online forums during each session of the course.

Allow 5 - 7 hours per session for completion of all requirements.

This is a course for teachers, technology specialists, curriculum specialists, professional development specialists, or other interested school personnel. Participants are expected to have regular access to computers and a Smart Board. In addition, participants should be proficient with using email, browsing the Internet, and navigating to computer files.

Course Goals and Objectives:
This course will enable participants to:

1. Understand what flipped instruction is and is not.
2. View examples of flipped instruction.
3. Join the Flipped Classroom Network.
4. Know the pros and cons of flipped instruction.
5. View examples of teachers who use flipped instruction to understand why they have chosen to use this method.
6.  Explore six websites with resources for flipping instruction.
7. Search and become familiar with content curation sites and additional resources that will assist them in the implementation of flipped instruction.
8.  Review videos and websites that showcase how to begin a flipped classroom and illustrations of teacher created lessons.
9.  Complete and upload a plan or lesson to introduce fellow educators to the flipped model.

Required Readings, Activities and Assignments: Each session includes readings, an activity and a discussion assignment, which participants are required to complete within each week.

Discussion Participation:
Students will be evaluated on the frequency and quality of their discussion board participation.  Students are required to post a minimum of two substantial postings each session, including one that begins a new thread and one that responds to an existing thread.  Postings that begin new threads will be reviewed based on their relevance, demonstrated understanding of course concepts, examples cited, and overall quality.  Postings that respond to other students will be evaluated on relevance, degree to which they extend the discussion, and tone.  Each week a new question will be posted to the discussion board for participants to answer and respond.

Course Outline:

Orientation: (1-2 hours)
Participants will prepare for the course with an introductory reading and icebreaker activity. Participants will read tip sheets for participating in online discussions, credit information, and complete an orientation survey.

Session One: What is Flipped Instruction? (5-7 hours)
You will discover what defines flipped instruction, and what are the important aspects surrounding this educational approach to improving student learning. By reading articles and watching video presentations, you will be able to distinguish the realities of flipping the classroom from the myths surrounding this method of instruction.

Session Two: Pros and Cons of Flipped Instruction (5-7 hours)
During this session, you will explore the research related to the flipped instruction method.  You will download and read the first comprehensive literature review on the flipped learning model. This twenty one-page review is presented by the Flipped Learning Network with research support from George Mason University and sponsored by Pearson. Resources during this session will highlight the successes of the flipped classroom, but in addition, the problems that arise with flipping instruction will be reviewed. With this approach, you will be able to form their own opinions about the benefits or obstacles to student learning that this educational trend would hold for their schools.

Session Three: Flipping the Classroom—The Teacher’s Perspective (5-7 hours)
This week you will see the flipped classroom from the perspective of teachers.  You will read articles, view videos, and listen to recorded webinars about the approaches classroom teachers have taken to flipping their lessons. Resources will give examples from educators who believe that the flipped classroom has truly individualized learning for all students. These teachers describe how students can now move at their own pace, how they can review what they need when they need to, and how the teacher is then freed up to work one-on-one with students on the content with which they most need support. They also point to the ability for students to catch up on missed lessons easily through the use of video and online course tools.

Session Four: Resources for Flipping Instruction (5-7 hours)
This week's focus will be on exploring the many curated video resources and technology creation tools available for teachers to successfully flip their classrooms. At the conclusion of this session, you will have located many resources to support your teachers with flipping instruction. You will explore the Khan Academy, and the recently launched TED-Ed section just for educators, which hopes to grow to a bank of several hundred videos in the next year. YouTube EDU, also offers access to a broad set of educational videos that range from academic lectures to inspirational speeches and everything in between.

Session Five: Flipping Your Own Lessons (5-7 hours)
This week you will create your own plan for flipping at least two of your lessons. You will use the knowledge from the past sessions to help you. You may have to go back to the other sessions to watch or look at materials again. Take at least two lessons that you already teach and create a plan for how you can flip those lessons. You will share these lessons with your other classmates. Your classmates will critique your lessons and provide feedback to your lessons.

Session Six: Is Flipping Instruction Right for your School? (5-7 hours)
In this final session, you will bring together all that you have learned about flipping instruction.  You will discover from other school leaders how they are making flipped classrooms a reality in their schools.  Considering your school's diverse learner needs, you will consider how the flipped model of instruction would meet your school's curriculum standards. The final project for the course will allow you to highlight ideas from each of the previous five sessions in the course.  You will use this final project as an outline for sharing what you have learned about flipping instruction with fellow educators.
