Title: Vice President of Technology

JOB SUMMARY:

The Vice President of Technology at PBS Reno leads the Engineering, IT and Facilities Departments. The VP of Technology works proactively to ensure that the PBS Reno production, broadcast infrastructure and facilities operations run smoothly and efficiently as well as stay up-to-date on emerging technologies and industry trends, and make recommendations for new initiatives that would benefit PBS Reno. The VP should also have a deep understanding of the broadcast industry, including engineering, production, and distribution. The VP should think strategically and identify opportunities for innovation while also demonstrating a strong understanding of the business aspects of the television industry, including budgets, revenue streams, and audience engagement. The VP will need to balance technical considerations with the goals and priorities of PBS Reno and its mission; and be able to communicate effectively and clearly with PBS Reno staff, leadership team, board of trustees and donors.
 

KEY RESPONSIBILIES:

  • Manage and oversee all technology, IT, and facilities operations for the station.
  • Develop and implement plans for technology, IT, and facilities that align with the station's strategic plan, mission and objectives.
  • Work collaboratively with the CEO, other senior leaders, and the PBS Reno Board of Trustees Technology Committee to ensure that technology, IT, and facilities support the station's overall mission and strategic goals.
  • Evaluate, train and manage the technology staff ensuring the team is working together efficiently.
  • Ensure all systems and infrastructure are up-to-date and meet the needs of the station, including broadcast equipment, IT systems, and physical facilities.
  • Oversee budgeting and financial management for technology, IT, and facilities, including capital expenditures, forecasting, and budget planning.
  • Develop and maintain positive vendor relationships to ensure the station has access to the latest technology, services, and solutions.
  • Stay up-to-date on emerging technologies and industry trends, and make recommendations for new initiatives that could benefit the station.
  • Demonstrate expertise in TV broadcast engineering, including equipment, tower, licensing, RF, translators, and FCC rules.
  • Monitor broadcast operations for FCC compliance;  evaluate, diagnose and troubleshoot discrepancy reports to improve problem areas and provide an error free on-air product.
  • Oversee procurement, installation and maintenance of all equipment.
  • Oversee management of in-house and outsourced personnel and contractors.
  • Oversee the technical aspect of all studio productions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: (an equivalent amount of training, education and experience will be considered):

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., computer science, engineering, business administration) required; advanced degree preferred.
  • First Class FCC license
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in technology, IT, and facilities management, preferably in a broadcast or media organization, with at least some experience in the PBS system.
  • Strong technical expertise in broadcast technology and IT including knowledge of the latest trends, technologies, and best practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in budgeting and financial management, including forecasting, capital expenditures, and budget planning.
  • Extensive understanding and knowledge of all FCC rules and regulations.
  • Demonstrate experience managing and directing a team through excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to identify and address complex issues quickly and effectively.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and initiatives simultaneously, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
