PBS Reno Honored as NCET’s Nonprofit of the Year
The NCET / EDAWN Tech Awards and Showcase is set for Tuesday, May 23, 2023
RENO, NV (APR 4, 2023) — PBS Reno, the community-owned nonprofit television station that serves the communities of northern and central Nevada and northeastern California is honored to be a recipient of the 2023 NCET Tech Award for Nonprofit of the Year.
Now in its 16th year, the NCET / EDAWN Tech Awards and Showcase celebrate businesses, nonprofits, and individuals in northern Nevada who have greatly enhanced the growth and prestige of the technology community; the EDAWN Awards recognize the people and resources that have played an integral part in contributing to the growth of our community.
According to NCET’s website, NCET presents the Nonprofit of the Year award to the nonprofit organization (a) that has best used technology or innovation to better achieve its nonprofit mission or (b) whose programs, events, and educational activities make technology more accessible, affordable, secure, and simpler for people in northern Nevada or which creatively and effectively uses technology to deliver its services to stakeholders.
“It is said that the most sincere compliment is that which comes from one’s peers, so we at PBS Reno are gratified to be recognized by NCET for the service we provide our region,” said Kurt Mische, PBS Reno President and CEO.
PBS Reno will be recognized as a top contributor to northern Nevada’s technological community at the 2023 NCET / EDAWN Tech Awards and Showcase on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at the Reno Elks Lodge at 5pm. PBS Reno is pleased to share the NCET Tech Award for Nonprofit of the Year with Neighbor Network of Northern Nevada (N4).
“NCET is thrilled to recognize PBS Reno as an outstanding steward of technology advancement; specifically, PBS Reno’s investment in our community’s children,” said Sarah Johns, NCET President and CEO. “Getting our kids excited about technology is a true asset to northern Nevada.”
PBS Reno is known for its primary television signal on channel 5.1 and for nearly 40 years has provided trustworthy, vital, and thoughtfully produced programs for viewers of all ages; from the very young who love Mister Roger’s Neighborhood to the young-at-art who appreciate trustworthy programming from the PBS NewsHour or thrilling storytelling from Masterpiece.
Off the air, PBS Reno Education Services provides thousands of Curiosity Classroom Workshops, the annual Writers Contest, and the digital series STEM Works to more than 79,000 students in northern Nevada.
PBS Reno delivered 3,740 Curiosity Classroom Workshops to local children in six northern Nevada counties during the 2021-2022 school year. STEM-based lessons and the use of age-appropriate robots drive these lessons and activities. PBS Reno has expanded its reach, and is on track to deliver even more workshops during the 2022-2023 school year to students in Washoe County, Carson City, Douglas County, Lyon County, Humboldt County, Elko County, and White Pine County.
PBS Reno Curiosity Classroom Workshops are free to families and teachers and provide interactive STEM-based lessons to kids in Pre-K through 4th grade. Robotics is among the most-requested lessons! PBS Reno Director of Education Joy Foremaster and a team of 40+ accredited facilitators bring age-appropriate robots to students in seven northern Nevada counties, and for many children, it’s their first experience with programming a robot and learning about direction, coding, and the importance of technology.
