2021 PBS KIDS Reno Writers Contest Winners Announced
RENO, NV (June 1, 2021) – PBS Reno is thrilled to announce the winners of the 2021 PBS KIDS Reno Writers Contest. The station received 1,979 entries and after a diligent and careful process of review, a team of judges selected twelve talented local children and their original, illustrated stories. This year’s theme was Compassion.
The five school districts represented are Washoe, Carson City, Douglas, Elko, and Winnemucca. Nearly 50 individual entries were submitted to the PBS Reno website.

“The Writers Contest is my favorite activity at PBS Reno,” said Nancy Maldonado, PBS Reno Vice President of Education. “I love reading the clever, creative writing from so many young authors. Our judges for the contest love reading the stories from the talented young writers in our community. I want to say a special ‘thank you’ to all of the teachers and parents who help make the PBS KIDS Reno Writers Contest so magical.”
The winning authors will be honored in a variety of exciting ways. Their stories will be published into hardcover books, and will also be featured on PBS Reno on the air and on the station’s website. In addition, the winners’ stories are currently on display at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport for visitors to enjoy.
“We received such heartwarming stories this year,” said Joy Foremaster, PBS Reno Director of Education. “The young authors in our community were really able to relate to our theme of Compassion, and we definitely heard their voice come through in their writing. We are so proud of all the kids who participated. They made this year's contest one of the best ever!”
All 1,979 children who submitted a story will receive a special certificate of participation from PBS Reno.

PBS KIDS Reno Writers Contest is produced by PBS and is based on the Reading Rainbow® Young Writers and Illustrators Contest, a concept developed by WNED-TV, Buffalo.
