JOB TITLE: Broadcast Engineering Technician 
REPORTS TO: VP of Technology             
FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Hourly /Exempt
 

JOB SUMMARY:

Broadcast Engineering Technician has the responsibility for assisting the Assistant Chief Engineer in maintaining and operating all production and engineering equipment at PBS Reno and associated remote sites. The Broadcast Engineering Technician position requires being on call, and at certain times, the broadcast engineering technician will be required to work during evening and early morning hours. The broadcast engineering technician will be available for consultation on operational or procedural problems and may be required to do production work at times. The following items list some of the responsibilities of the Broadcast Engineering Technician:


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Monitor and prioritize the tech support e mails and repair equipment as needed. Maintain all production and engineering equipment in a suitable and timely fashion to insure the smooth and efficient operation of the station, insure compliance with FCC technical rules.
  • Help with installation and maintenance of transmission equipment.
  • Install, configure, test, and maintain operating systems, application software, virtual machines, and management tools to keep lab servers/broadcast air chains up to date.
  • Be familiar with on-air operations so issues are effectively troubleshot. Address operational failures to maintain quality broadcast operations.  Evaluate operations systems for efficiency improvements.
  • Suggest and implement, on approval, equipment or system modifications.  Design and construct, upon approval, custom equipment, hardware and cable assemblies.
  • Support verification and validation testing of receivers in our lab (mobile phones, tablets, TVs, and Gateways).
  • Develop requirements and acceptance plans for qualifying software and station equipment.
  • Develop, maintain security, backup, and redundancy strategies.
  • Identify replacement parts needed for proper repairs and maintenance to all PBS Reno equipment and systems. Provide information regarding part numbers and the best source for the necessary parts.
  • Available for on call responsibility.  May be required to carry a cellular telephone, and be prepared to travel to remote sites in inclement weather as needed to provide fast response to engineering emergencies.
  • Familiarity with IP for broadcast equipment set up and operation required. Computer LAN network set up and maintenance skill a plus. Will be asked to respond to routine computer help requests occasionally.
  • Should be able to diagnose and repair a personal computer.
     

 

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE REQUIRED (an equivalent amount of training, education and experience will be considered):

  • Understanding of TV broadcast systems, workflows and distribution.
  • Experience with video streaming technology (e.g., MPEG Dash, HLS, MSS, and RTSP).
  • Experience with virtualization and containerization (VMware, Virtual Box).
  • Working experience with LTE and 5G technologies.
  • Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft OS, Office Suite; IT & Network skills on broadcast related, IP based equipment and applications.
  • Ability to work on both IP based broadcast equipment and legacy broadcast equipment.
  • Associate Degree in Electronics, Communications, or equivalent combination of education/work-related/military experience preferred.
  • Minimum 1-year experience in a television-broadcasting environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational skills and willingness to assist others.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize assignments.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of the position.
  • Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work extended hours, as needed i.e. weekend, evening and holidays.
  • Available for emergency response 24/7, as needed.
  • Act as responder for station disaster recovery.
  • Have valid state driver’s license. Acceptable driving record.
  • Have the right to work in the United States.

 


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:
 

  • Must be able to stand, sit, reach, climb, work in close proximity to others, work outdoors in all weather conditions, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions.
  • Must be able to lift, set up and operate equipment weighing up to 75 pounds, and be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls.
