GLOSSARY

STEM — STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. It represents an interdisciplinary and integrated approach to gathering hands-on experience and applying “real-world” knowledge. People who work in STEM fields use knowledge in science, engineering, technology, or math to understand the world around us and to solve problems.

Hydrogeologist — A scientist who studies subsurface water formations, investigating how water moves through the earth and how it's affected by human activities

Subsurface Geology — The study of rock and soil located beneath the Earth's surface

Reservoir An artificial lake where water is collected and kept in quantity for use

Watershed — An area of land that drains all the streams and rainfall to a common outlet such as the outflow of a reservoir, lake, or any point along a stream channel

River Ecosystem — Part of larger watershed networks or catchments, where smaller headwater streams drain into mid-size streams, which progressively drain into larger river networks

Tributary — A stream or river that flows into a larger stream, river, or a lake

Water Quality — The chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of water based on the standards of its usage

Purify  To clear from contaminants, material defilement or imperfection

Contaminant  Something that is or that makes impure

Pristine  Clean, unsullied, without contamination

Water main   A pipe or conduit for conveying water

Wellhouse — A covered structure (as a house or room) built around the top of a well

Hydraulics — The branch of engineering that deals with the mechanical properties and application of liquids in motion, particularly in relation to power transmission and fluid mechanics

Civil Engineering — a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment
